“Everyone Is Just Constantly on Their Screen”: Arjan Bajwa on Social Media Addiction

Known for films such as Rustom, Fashion and Kabir Singh, actor Arjan Bajwa has a rather candid take on the way social media has become a part of everyday life. While he acknowledges that it has made information from across the world easily accessible, he feels that excessive scrolling has slowly turned into an unhealthy habit.

“Scrolling through social media has become a very bad addiction for everybody. I don’t consider it healthy at all because everyone is on their phones constantly, trying to get information about what’s happening in the digital world,” he says.

According to Arjan, the habit is particularly visible in the way people reach for their phones as soon as they wake up.

“Somehow, now I feel it is like a dopamine rush people get to keep checking social media,” he adds.

The actor feels that somewhere along the way, social media has moved away from its original purpose of simply being an informative platform.

“Social media is supposed to give you information, but right now, it feels more like an addiction to keep watching the screen, whether it’s right after getting out of bed or even before going to sleep,” he says.

He also points out how difficult it has become for people to stay away from their screens.

“Everyone is just constantly on their screen. I just hope there is some cure to this addiction soon,” he adds.

At the same time, Arjan does not deny the positives that come with social media. With newspapers and magazines becoming less relevant for many people, he believes digital platforms have made it possible to stay updated with events happening anywhere in the world.

“Social media is supposed to be informative, especially now that newspapers and magazines have become less relevant and people increasingly depend on digital information from across the world,” he says. “It is a big boon that you can watch the news and know what is happening anywhere in the world right on your phone screen,” he adds.

However, according to Arjan, the problem begins when the endless stream of content starts affecting people’s ability to focus.

“But then it becomes an addiction, and your attention span also does not go beyond a few seconds. It’s important to get information from across the globe, and yes, social media is a big tool for that,” he says.

“There is also a lot of unnecessary or completely random content that takes away your time, energy and attention as you keep scrolling throughout the day,” Arjan concludes.
