Pakistani actor and singer Farhan Saeed is widely known for his work, including the hit TV dramas ‘Mere Humsafar’ and ‘Suno Chanda’, and recently released his solo album ‘Khat’ after two decades in the music industry. He shares some behind the scenes anecdotes about writing the album, and insight into his music.
1. Khat is your first solo project in over 20 years – why did you decide you wanted to make this now?
I’ve been creating music for over two decades and in recent years I’ve also been working consistently in acting. I genuinely enjoyed that journey but I never wanted my focus to shift entirely towards acting. This album was long due, something I owed to myself and to my fans and it felt like the right moment to finally bring a project that reflects my musical path and everything I’ve lived through.
2. How would you describe the album to a first time listener?
It’s a piece of my heart, a “khat” (letter) from my heart to yours. It carries nostalgia, emotion, vulnerability and honesty. I believe listeners will find something to connect with no matter what phase of life they’re in. I just want people to find a bit of their own story and peace in it.
3. Out of the album, which song was the hardest for you to record and write?
There wasn’t any song that felt “hard,” but a few were definitely different for me. I experimented with my singing style in some tracks, styles I haven’t really explored before so that part was interesting. Most of the songs were in my comfort zone, where I tried to keep the sound people know me for, but with a fresh touch so it still feels like my own.
One song in particular, Yeh Kya Ho Gaya, leans more towards rock, which is quite different from what I usually do. Another one, Jave Mahiya, also pushed me out of my usual style. So a couple of songs were a bit challenging but overall, that’s the fun of it.
4. Is there a dream performer you would want to collaborate with?
My dream collaborations would have been with artists who, unfortunately, are no longer with us. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Sahib and Jagjit Singh ji are two legends I would have loved to work with. InshaAllah, I plan to do covers of their songs soon as a tribute to them.
Apart from that, I’m already planning new collaborations with different upcoming artists. We have some brilliant new talent in Pakistan and I’m in talks with a few for my upcoming tracks. I’m sure my fans and music lovers will enjoy what’s coming next. There are already a couple of collaborations with female artists in this album, but for the next album and future songs, I’m looking to work more with emerging Pakistani artists. I’ve also never collaborated with a rap artist before so you never know, that might be on the list too.
In addition to his singing career, Saeed’s television career is on a high, as he was recently seen in back to back tv dramas.
