We spoke to the cast of short film ‘Starch’, Gayatri Bahl and Vandit Bhatt, as well as director Ajai Viswanath, on the red carpet of the New York Indian Film Festival 2024.

The film follows the story of an immigrant wife who is trying to help her family during a tough financial situation, and showing her struggle.

When asked about what it means to have their film be screened at the film festival, Viswanath said ‘It was amazing to see a space for South Asian films across the diaspora in New York … and now to be here bringing a film of our own , it’s really special.”

For Bahl, it was a full circle moment, as she had attended the film festival years ago with a friend of hers whose film was being screened at the festival!

‘I think that was like 2015, and so, it’s like wow here we are in 2024, and I’m in a film that is so deeply aligned with where I am at right now. It’s quite a full circle moment for me.”

All three emphasized the need for more diaspora work to be showcased at film screenings and theaters around the world, and expressed their excitement with watching the films being screened at the festival!
