Dey started off her career at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, which provided her with several opportunities in both film and television series’, however, some were never released. She explains that although it was frustrating that some of her projects would never reach audiences, she didn’t have any control over that, and the project was still a great learning experience.

“For a fleeting moment, you do feel a little depressed, because you worked so much for the audience to see it, and they’re not able to see it, but then you have to bring yourself to move forward, because this is done.”

One of Dey’s most prominent roles that garnered her much appreciation from viewers was her portrayal of Jhalkari Bai, the warrior queen of Jhansi, in the BBC produced series. Although the series was created by a British director, Dey praises their ability to create a well researched series and felt empowered playing Jhalkari Bai.

“It’s good that an international platform wanted to collaborate on this project, but whether it’s international or Indian, the project remains the same. If the story is good, and the performance is coming up, any performance is appreciated … the area where they’re going to promote the film will be big, which is an added advantage.”

Next week, Dey is traveling to the French riviera to attend the Cannes film festival for ‘The Shameless’, and is beyond excited for audiences to watch the film.

“My director has written a beautiful script, and the best part is that he has defined every character meticulously. My character, Durva, had shades of gray in it, and to bring it alive on screen, I had to give it that extra effort to bring that perfect balance into it.”
