Priyanka Chopra on Her Relations With Bollywood

Actress Priyanka Chopra has forgiven, but she might not have forgotten. At a special screening of her Prime Video series Citadel in the city, the star, who had previously discussed moving to the US because she felt “cornered” in Bollywood, spoke about her remark and explained that she felt “articulate” and confident enough to speak her mind.

In response to Priyanka’s remarks, there was a discussion on social media about how the Hindi film industry operates, its internal politics, and its gatekeeping mentality. However, there was a section that also questioned the interview’s timing, coming just before the premiere of her ambitious Prime Video film Citadel.

Priyanka Chopra was questioned about her decision to speak about her experience in Bollywood at a special event for the show, which Game of Thrones actor Richard Madden also attended. The actor responded,

“When I was on the podcast, I was asked about the journey of my life. So I started with when I was young, when I was 10, 15, 22, 30 and 40-years-old. I was talking about the truth of my journey. I think I am now comfortable enough to talk about that phase in my life.”

The actor claimed that she is in a better place now, particularly in relation to her “tumultuous relationship” with how the movie business operated at the time. Priyanka claimed that she has since expressed forgiveness and moved past what happened to her.

“I think now where I am, I am okay enough to articulate what I felt. I think I have had a very tumultuous relationship with what occurred, then I forgave, I moved on long time ago and I made my peace with it. I think that’s why it was easy for me to talk about it in an open manner in a safe space,” she said.

Without naming any specific individuals, Priyanka Chopra stated in a recent interview that she encountered resistance in the Hindi film industry as people stopped casting her in films, ultimately forcing her to move to the West.

Priyanka revealed she was being “cornered” in Bollywood and had some “beef” with those in the business during an interview with Dax Shepherd for his podcast Armchair Expert. Anjula Acharia, her manager, stepped in to save her at that point. Acharia called her after spotting her in a music video to inquire about her interest in pursuing a music career in the US.

“I was being pushed into a corner in the industry (Bollywood). I had people not casting me, I had beef with people, I am not good at playing that game so I kind of was tired of the politics and I said I needed a break. This music thing gave me an opportunity to go into another part of the world, not crave for the movies I didn’t want to get but I would require to schmooze certain clubs and cliques of people. It would require groveling and I had worked a long time by then that I didn’t feel like I wanted to do it,” she had said in the interview.

The ambitious spy drama Citadel, which will premiere on April 28 on Prime Video, is currently in production. David Weil, the showrunner, and the Russo Brothers‘ AGBO (Joe and Anthony Russo, directors) produce it.
