The Top 5 Gambling related Hollywood movies

Spread the love

If you haven’t ever visited a casino before, your only exposure to high stakes gambling, roulette wheels, slot machines, and card tables might be on the silver screen. High-rolling casino movies are certainly a big part of the Hollywood industry, with exciting scenes and stories developed to keep you watching at the tip of your toes. Casino-related movies aren’t always about characters gambling their money away or trying to “beat the house” (even though that often plays a major part). The casino setting often acts as a catalyst to show the characters’ deeper characteristics &  flaws, giving the opportunity for a more well-rounded movie.

  • Casino (1995)

Based on a real story, introduced to the big screen thanks to the mastery of Scorsese and the talented performance of Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro, and Sharon Stone, Casino is hands-down the biggest gambling-related classic movie that hits the peak of any list. The movie makes us feel like we’re having the curtain lifted from a scene that we really should avoid watching for our own safety. De Niro plays a bookie who has to run Vegas casinos for mob bosses, while Joe Pesci’s character Nicky Santoro is a killer and a thief who’s violent and reckless behavior puts both of them in danger. In a true Scorsese dynamic editing, Casino stands out from the director’s other mob movies with some of the most popular scenes since the beginning of cinema, taking gambling on a new level – behind closed doors where the steaks are very high.

  • Casino Royale (2006)

If you are a fan of the James Bond franchise, then you will undoubtedly love Casino Royale. It introduces a rookie agent, (James Bond), who sets out on his first-ever mission as 007, in which he is assigned to battle against Le Chiffre, who is the banker to the world’s biggest terrorist organizations. As Secret Intelligence reveals that Le Chiffre has plans to raise money in a big, high-stakes poker game, it is up to Bond to play against and beat him, which leads to the death of his crime syndicate. Casino Royale is also Daniel Craig’s first film as James Bond and arguably took its place among the best titles in the series. It shows the legendary agent in a new perspective and exposes glamorous private high-stakes casino games.

  • Ocean’s 11 (2001)

Ocean’s 11 is certainly one of the most entertaining heist movies out there. It narrates the story of Danny Ocean, a man who breaks his parole regulations straight after being released from prison and travels to Las Vegas, wherewith the help of his old mates and acquaintances, plans to simultaneously rob The Mirage, The Bellagio, and the MGM Grand casinos, all of which owned by his enemy – Terry Benedict. The film was directed by Steven Soderbergh, with the flawless performances of Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Matt Roberts, Andy Garcia, Julia Roberts, Bernie Mac, and others. Besides being highly appreciated by the public, Ocean’s 11 also received multiple well-deserved film award nominations.

  • Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)

Before his streak of unusual, colorful quirky characters, Johnny Depp did an amazing performance as Raoul Duke who takes a trip to Las Vegas, searching for the American dream together with a crazy lawyer. This remaster of Hunter S. Thompson’s novel of the same name is all about their psychedelic journey, infused with endless drugs and alcohol. The duo fails at reaching their American dream goal, coming across disillusioned hitch-hikers, gamblers, and of course the odd police officer on a run of surreal experiences, as the intoxicating substances eventually take hold.

  • 21 (2008)

The US heist drama film, 21 is definitely another gambling-related movie worth watching. Inspired by the true story narrated in the book ‘Bringing Down the House’ by Ben Mezrich, the movie narrates the story of a group of prodigal students, who form a unique blackjack team. Although, the group uses unique techniques such as counting cards and secret signals in order to increase their probability of winning. The team immediately makes big profits but also experiences certain negative consequences on their private, personal lives. The film’s main actor Ben makes a long journey from being one of the most serious and brilliant students to becoming a proficient blackjack player, which eventually leads him into deep trouble.
