Anu Menon’s upcoming film Shakuntala Devi has been creating news ever since its announcement. From Vidya Balan in the titular role to Sanya Malhotra playing her daughter and Amit Sadh playing the role of her son-in-law – the film boost of a stellar cast.
The film is based on the life of the mathematics genius or human-computer, Shakuntala Devi. She’s known for her ability to make incredibly swift calculations.
As per the source of a leading daily, the film will cover both her personal as well as professional lives,
“The producers decided to not simply make a biopic on Shakuntala Devi’s mathematical genius. It would have been too boring to simply focus on her work. They wanted to make a film like Theodore Melfi’s Hidden Figures where the personal lives of the ladies cuts sharply into their professional.”
Sanya Malhotra, who is cast as Shakuntala Devi’s daughter, has a role as pivotal as Vidya Balan. Apparently, the mother-daughter conflict will provide a dramatic relatable core to the film.
Says a source,
“Rather than make it a one-woman show like the Jayalalithaa biopic featuring Kangana Ranaut, the producers and director of Shakuntala Devi have given equal prominence to her home life, her daughter played by Sanya, her son-in-law played by Amit Sadh and her husband Jisshu Sengupta.”
Apparently, the decision to make the biopic giving equal importance to both characters came after seeing the poor response to single-character biopics received at the box office. Biopics with a multiple characters like Mission Mangal and Padman got a much better public response that those like Thackeray and Manto. Even Kabir Khan’s ’83, a biopic on ex-skipper Kapil Dev will have other cricketers getting a perceptive position in the plot.
Sony Pictures Networks Productions and Vikram Malhotra are the producers of the film. An Anu Menon directorial, Shakuntala Devi will see a worldwide release soon.
