Festival showcases the best of music, art, fashion and film

(Vancouver – June 7, 2019) – 5X, a world-class festival celebrating South Asian youth culture, returns next week June 12-16, 2019. Last year, 5X rebranded after a hosting the ‘City of Bhangra’ festival since 2004. The newly branded 5X Fest is a 5-day festival and includes a wide array of events. 5X will host more than 30 artists including local talents such as DJ Intense, Kirti Arneja, Anumation and some of the world’s most famous South Asian artists such as Jaz Dhami, Mickey Singh and Raja Kumari.

Tarun Nayar, 5X Executive Director, said,

‘We’re stoked to be hosting our second annual 5X Festival next week in the Lower Mainland. Surrey is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada and boasts one of the strongest populations of South Asians – this festival is created by us and for us. With 5X, we’re bringing together our community and celebrating emerging talent and the biggest names in the industry.’

Jaz Dhami, Punjabi Singer, said:

“I’m thrilled to be back in BC and performing in Surrey this year. Surrey has become an internationally recognized city for the South Asian community, it’s a melting pot for all things Desi and I’m so excited to be part of the 5X Festival where we can showcase all that is positive about our community. It’s great to be able to support festivals like 5X who are pushing the barriers and providing platforms for us to highlight all creatives in our community, it encourages artists like myself. I’m excited to see all my amazing fans in Surrey.”

The festival kicks off with an incredible pop-up Arts Hub at Beaumont Studios in Vancouver next week and will host an Art Party, Movie Night and Womxn’s Showcase event. Following that, 5X’s weekend events include the flagship Block Party, an outdoor music party, and a panel event called 5X Creates.

5X – Festival Schedule:

June 12, 2019 – 5X Art Party: Showcasing local talent from Lower Mainland including fashion designers and visual artists, this night will feature young South Asian artists impacting art and fashion fans around the world.

June 13, 2019 – 5X Film Festival: Featuring five acclaimed short films from different regions from around the globe. Film-lovers and filmmakers alike will be inspired by this unique collection of stories spotlighting a myriad of South Asian Diasporic identities and experiences.

June 14, 2019 – 5X Womxn’s Showcase: Our effort to address male bias in the music industry, this is a night featuring local female musicians poets and comedians. All genders and sexualities are welcome to attend.

June 15, 2019 – 5X Block Party: Our flagship event and the free party will take place again in Central Surrey. Featuring a mind-bending array of performers who expand the parameters of what it is to be South Asian. Some of the biggest headliners in the world meet the next generation of cutting-edge talent you’ll be thrilled to experience.

June 16, 2019 – 5X Creates: From the mysteries of building a social media following to pursuing your creative passions, learn from some of the most compelling South Asian creative professionals in the world in this afternoon of music-oriented workshops and panel discussions about the future of art, culture, and community-building.

Founded in 2004, VIBC is a charitable organization that previously hosted the well-known “City of Bhangra” Festival, bhangra competitions, and other events to bring awareness to and support South Asian arts. Last year, the team rebranded and launched 5X with the intention to create a space specifically for South Asian millennials. 5X is thankful for its partners including British Columbia Arts Council, Creative BC, Heritage Canada, City of Surrey, TD, Jio Saavn and the City of Vancouver.
