And the Award Goes to ?? – IFFLA 2018 Winners Announced

The 16th Annual Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles concluded on Sunday evening (April 15) with a red carpet and gala that featured the Los Angeles premiere and official HFPA screening of Rima DasVILLAGE ROCKSTARS, one of the most praised Indian Indie films on the festival circuit and winner of four awards at the National Film Awards in India.

The awards for this years films include:

1) GRAND JURY AWARD – BEST FEATURE:
Village Rockstars (director: Rima Das)

Village Rockstars received the Grand Jury Prize for Best Feature. The Jury is quoted: “This film explores gender expectations in a gentle manner. It blends beautiful cinematography with naturalistic performances in a fun and uplifting coming-of age story. Working as a one woman army, this director created an unforgettable portrait of childhood.”

2) GRAND JURY AWARD – FEATURES SPECIAL MENTION:
Sushama Deshpande, for her performance in AJJI (director: Devashish Makhija)

“Taking on difficult characters is always a challenge for an actor. It takes courage to humanize and portray a role that breaks the stereotypes. This actress demonstrated undeniable talent and commitment to deliver an authentic and grounded performance.”

3) GRAND JURY AWARD – BEST SHORT FILM:
The Caregiver (director: Ruthy Pribar)

“a film that we loved for its elegant representation of the nuances between compassion and survival, and for its understated yet decisive storytelling.”

4) GRAND JURY AWARD – SHORT FILM SPECIAL MENTION:
Counterfeit Kunkoo (director: Reema Sengupta)

“an incredible short film about apartment hunting in Mumbai that not only manages to be well-paced, gripping and bold but also a heart-wrenching perspective into gender inequality in metropolitan India.”

5) AUDIENCE CHOICE AWARD – BEST FEATURE (NARRATIVE):
Take Off (director: Mahesh Narayanan)

6) AUDIENCE CHOICE AWARD – BEST DOCUMENTARY:
Lovesick (directors: Priya Giri Desai & Ann S. Kim)

7) AUDIENCE CHOICE AWARD – BEST SHORT:
An Essay of the Rain (director: Nagraj Manjule)
