Vipin Patwa is a music composer who is one of the emerging music directors of Hindi films for the present generation. He has also directed the music for Bollywood Diaries. His work in Bollywood Diaries was acclaimed by all the stalwarts in the industry.
UrbanAsian got a chance to interview Vipin Patwa where he spoke about the three songs that he composed in DaasDev and also about his future projects and a lot more.

1) Did you always want to be a music composer?
Yes, I never wanted to be a music director because of the place from where I belong never possessed any institution which could proclaim that music director was an option. But slowly as you grew with academics you come to know that after singers there is music composer then music arrangers. There are many sections. But I never had an idea about this when I was a child. In the course of time, I came to know about things and I gradually sorted out that becoming music director was a better option for me as I had the ability to compose music and I thought I could do this very well. As I belonged to a non-musical background I never thought that I could do this better or not. But this leisure activity gradually started developing in a professional thing for me as I’ve become a music composer. During the year 2007-8, I had decided that I would definitely become a music director. But when I started studying music during 1994 I never realised that I would become a music composer.
2) If not a music composer what would you be?
I’ve always been very stubborn in my life so apart from my personal life and my education music is the only thing which has dominated my life. I’ve always been after music in my life and will remain throughout my life, till I’m alive. There is no other focus in my life apart from music. I always intend to create good music and apart from that there are your social responsibilities, your personal responsibilities but barring that there is only music which plays a vital role in my life, so I don’t think I can imagine doing something else.
3) You have recorded with the top Bollywood singers like Sonu Nigam, Mika, KK, Shaan, Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan and much more. So anyone left in particular with whom you want to work with? Why?
I’ve recorded with most of the top singers as you have mentioned in your question. Even singers from Pakistan; I’ve recorded with them. All the top singers from India or Pakistan have sung for me. Yes, now there is a definite plan from my end to do an international collaboration with some big artists. I would definitely like to work with someone from the Hollywood industry.
4) Do you still like to compose jingles?
I’ve worked on jingles before as in for Anand da and small time builders. But my main focus was always on music direction in Bollywood films. For me, Bollywood music is important because in India there is a great future for independent music. Music in India is known because of Bollywood films which isn’t the case in rest of the world. But if your song comes in big Bollywood movies and becomes a hit then you’re known as a good singer or composer. But if you fail to work in Bollywood movies you don’t get a recognition. Hence my prime focus is on Bollywood movies and in the future, I might think about composing some singles or International music.
5) What is the music in DaasDev like?
People always tend to say that our music is different, but I would really like to point out that the music of DaasDev is really different. The director of the movie, Mr Sudhir Mishra has his own view of looking at the movie in a unique way. You heard the story DaasDev when the original name was Dev Daas. As you can see the person has literally changed the name of the movie so by this you can understand the thought process of the director. He always flips the content shoots films in the third angle shoots the sad angle content in a way which isn’t sad. So he has his own way and accordingly the music of the movie has been recorded very well. There a song in the movie Sehmi Hai Dhadkan which is sung by Atif Aslam and was recorded in Dubai. It is a song in which there are both major and minor chords, such types come very rarely in any songs. But in this song both chords have come together. So I believe that people are enjoying the song and appreciating it a lot. I’ve seen the views and comments on YouTube and they are really very good.
6) How has your journey been in the Industry till now?
No journey has been smooth sailing. The journey that I had up till now hasn’t been good or bad but I’m happy. And this is a process in which we have to move forward and in order to achieve something you have to face a few difficulties. So hence you have to face few problems and move forward, create good content, good music, do something which will make my music be evergreen everlasting so that people shall remember my songs even after I’m gone. I’m a qualified person I have always been well in academics, hence my thought process is to create something good.
7) What difficulties did you have to face?
I had a few difficulties in learning music, this goes during the 90’s era. The place that I belonged to did not have a musical background. A person residing in a small village in U. P. would never have that condition to treat music as I never had the scope nor the projection or guidelines towards music no guardianship nor anyone who would make me understand music. But I feel somewhere inside I had what it took to learn music or it must be from my earlier life. There was the long journey for my music learning days which began in the year 1994 where I officially started learning music. And that journey has led me to become a music director in Hindi movies
8) What’s the worst advice someone has given you?
Your question is what’s the worst advice someone has given me but according to me, there is no such thing like that. As some wrong advice may also teach you some right things as to what to avoid. I’ve received many wrong pieces of advice hence I never feel that is wrong. I always feel that you always learn from making mistakes. When someone is spoon feeding you, you generally don’t tend to learn anything. But when you make mistakes you never make the same mistakes again as you learn that you must avoid it. So hence I feel there is no wrong advice in my life.
9) What do you do when you are not composing music?
When I don’t compose music I still compose music I may not compose for films but I compose for myself. I listen to those songs myself or make my friends listen to it. And if no one used to listen I would make the trees the plants listen to my music.
10) What kind of music do you love the most?
I always want to do music which has a message, through which I can convey my emotions. According to me, music is a way of expression. As I’m not a poet who will write a song. I’m a music composer so through my music through my composition I like to express. Even in my earlier movie Bollywood Diaries, I had something to say through my music and in this movie too which is DaasDev. If you hear the music you will come to know that I want to say something. The thing is that it depends on how many people understand or the way that I choose was the right one, this only time will tell. I’ve always tried to compose music which has a Say or message.
11) What’s next?
My future projects are, one Rajashri film, few T-series films. I wouldn’t like to disclose any further but yes there are a few projects which I’m working on but I’m not taking a lot of projects in hand as I believe not losing on the quality of my work. My focus is on delivering good work.
