Film Review: Patti Cake$ is a sweet serving of passion and determination!

Have you ever felt the weight of broken dreams being lifted by the power of strong will and determination? Debutant director Geremy Jasper’s musical drama Patti Cake$ gives you the very feeling from the get go.

Set in the suburbs of New Jersey, Patti Cake$ follows the life of Patricia Dombrowski (Danielle MacDonald), an aspiring rapper who is constantly reminded of her ill fated future by her mother Barb (Bridget Everett). In attempts to juggle her daily life and accomplish her ultimate dream of becoming a rapper, Patti joins forces with her best friend Hareesh (Siddharth Dhananjay) to produce explosive rap songs.

From the get go Jasper takes the ordinary and makes it extraordinary by simply keeping it real. Using emotions rather than grandeur, the cast of Patti Cake$ brings out the best in their respective characters in a comical manner. Despite being foreign to the Jersey culture, both Dombrowski and Dhananjay essay their characters flawlessly. Overall, the feel good film leaves the audience smiling with every frame. Urban Asian gives Patti Cake$ a 3.5/5.
