Be Kind – Donate to Uttarakhand flood relief!

It’s been a month since the deadly floods in the Uttarkhand region of India, but the struggle to rebuild is far from over.  The floods that occurred due to the monsoon rains are believed to be the heaviest in 80 years, and have created very unsafe terrain.  So much so, that it has been difficult to get aid in the area.

Air Commodore Rajesh Isser, who has been heading rescue and relief operations for the Indian Air Force (IAF), told Reuters,

“We are dealing with the most dangerous terrain and most unpredictable weather in the world. One minute it is clear to fly, the next you can’t see more than a couple of feet ahead of you due to fog or heavy rains. There is a lot of pressure and frustration. You know you need to get rations to people or evacuate them, but all you can do is watch the skies.”

Other newspapers are reporting that it was human encroachment that resulted in such a devastating situation.  The swollen rivers swept away entire villages in the state during its peak tourist season!  Over 1000 are believed dead, 1000s others stranded, and approximately 100,000 people have been evacuated.  As you can imagine, they need funds to help those remaining in the area and in need of rescue, as well as to help the region rebuild.
