Movie Review: Should you find your way to the theater for Finding Fanny?

Director: Homi Adajania

Cast: Deepika Padukone, Naseeruddin Shah, Dimple Kapadia, Arjun Kapoor, Pankaj Kapur

Rating: 4/5

The trailers of Finding Fanny promises a wild Goa adventure with legendary and talented actors, a little chaos and lots of laughs on this journey of a few unlikely friends. The trailer doesn’t do the film justice! The entire story is narrated by Angie aka Deepika Padukone. She starts with the old fashioned little town of Poculim in Goa and the heartbreaking love story of the lovable “Ferdie” or Ferdinand played by Naseeruddin Shah.

Ferdie receives a love letter he wrote to Stephanie Fernandez proposing to his beloved Fanny, apparently she never received it. Ferdie had been waiting 46 years wondering about her and when he tells Angie she magnificently manipulates Savio (Arjun Kapoor), Don Pedro (Pankaj Kapur) and Mai Rosie (Dimple Kapadia) all so she can get a car and a driver to take Ferdie on the road to meet Fanny. Of course who could forget Rosie’s narcoleptic cat, Nereus, who gets accidentally thrown out the window during the trip and dies.

This road trip isn’t about finding fanny of course, It is a journey of finding oneself and resolving all the issues hidden deep in each of these characters. Ferdie must learn to take a stand in his life, Rosie must deal with the death of her son and stop blaming Savio. Savio and Angie must deal with their unspoken feelings for each other.

finding fanny

Savio, Angie and Rosie’s son Gabo (Ranveer Singh) were childhood best friends and there was always competition between Savio and Gabo. Apparently Gabo only proposed to Angie because Savio loved Angie. Unfortunately Gabo died on his wedding day choking on the figurine of the couple on top of their wedding cake. Don Pedro is obsessed with painting big bodacious women which is why he is madly in love with Rosie, a full figured woman.

This crazy bunch will have you falling in love with them and laughing throughout the entire movie! Dimple Kapadia’s comic timing is unmatched, her expressions, line delivery and sarcasm will leave you in stitches! Naseeruddin Shah is so damn lovable you just can’t help but want to give him a hug! He’s so natural and comfortable in his role, proof of what a talented actor he is. Pankaj Kapur is also a great addition to this team of legends, he is so off his rocker fans will love it.

Finding Fanny

Deepika was a natural but her role was quite flat, there could have been more to it. Arjun Kapoor was the youngest of the crew with the least experience but he did try to keep up with the legends. His performance was inconsistent, at times his angry young man attitude was spot on but other scenes he delivered lines without emotions. Arjun definitely could have done better but he is improving as an actor. The chemistry between not just Deepika and Arjun but all the characters was very natural. Angie and Ferdie’s father-daughter type relationship was sweet as well as Angie and Rosie’s daughter-in-law and mother-in-law relationship was also very beautiful to watch.

If you walk into the theater expecting a typical Bollywood masala film, I’m sad to say you will be very disappointed because there is nothing typical about this film! Finding Fanny is unpredictable, realistic (as in it doesn’t take 11 bullets for the hero to die and no one goes on a killing rampage for revenge) and best of all, the screenplay is so well written.

The movie is isn’t filled with item numbers, overly dramatic scenes or corny jokes. Finding Fanny uses music wisely with fun extra music videos, it shows off emotionally charged turning points in the film that touches the heart and the movie is so funny even the silent moments will have you laughing. If not for anything else, you should see the movie for Dimple Kapadia’s comedy and Naseeruddin Shah’s lovable nature. We definitely recommend Finding Fanny, hands down the best movie we’ve come across in a while!
