The industry stood divided on Kangana Ranaut’s claim about nepotism existing in Bollywood and Karan Johar being the biggest nepotist.
It was now Arjun Kapoor, who during ‘Half Girlfriend’ interviews, spoke about it. He said:
“We only look at the acting part of it. If you look at it as a profession, the kind of employment that we offer the people, whether cinematography, writing, direction, production, background music, there are enough people who aren’t affiliated to anybody in the industry and they’re working, earning their bread and butter and taking care of their family. Isn’t that what an industry is essentially supposed to do? The forefront is our faces. Therefore the question is always raised with us. To answer that, in the last 10 years, there’s been an evolution. I can name few – Ayushmann Khurrana, Sushant Singh Rajput, Sidharth Malhotra. They have no family heritage over here. I would just like to say at the end of the day, every business/profession, every father/mother wants their son/daughter to be part of their profession, and if the child is inclined, then they educate themselves into the profession. They might learn under their parents and then they are groomed to take over their profession. It happens in all fields. I’m not saying it always happens, but if the child is interested, then that is the process.”
He added,
“We don’t have a degree in the film industry that makes us considered capable. Our true degree/test is the Box Office. Till the day the audience is coming after paying money to watch us, people will make films with us, whether you’re from here or anywhere. Rakesh Roshan started as an outsider. He built something and his son has taken it forward. He’s worked towards the audience and therefore today he’s considered a star. I’m not denying that we don’t have easier access, but at the end of the day, the director will not take us if we aren’t salable, because it’s a business. It’s a very expensive business so you’ve to be worth it.”
