'Lion' Holiday screening event by Mothers with Sons!

There is no better feeling than walking out of a good movie feeling teary eyed, emotionally moved, and satisfied for just seeing good cinema. One of Urban Asian’s team members Rome Chopra attended the intimate screening event Lion hosted by Mothers With Sons.

The Weinstein Company presents Lion a American-British drama film directed by Garth Davis. The film is a true story based on Saroo Brierley’s autobiographical story A Long Way Home. Lion was released in cinemas on November 26 and currently being privately screened in LA and New York City.

The private screening event held yesterday December 8 at Dolby 88 began with a cocktail hour where guests got to network and of course take pictures. The Weinstein brothers were unable to attend, but Harvey Weinstein’s wife Georgina opened the screening and talked briefly about the film, and the partnering NGO Magic Bus. The conversation was then followed by the film itself.

It was then when the audience was taken through the Saroo’s true journey. Saroo is played by British actor Dev Patel, who was lost from his family at the age of five and was adopted by an Australian family, searches for his long-lost family using Google Earth. Rome specifically mentioned to me that the way the ‘Google Earth’ montage was presented so beautifully. Another interesting aspect of the film that he noticed was the division of language that came together on-screen was so well done. Half of the films dialogue was in English and the other half in Hindi. Rome mentioned that when this is typically done in cinema it usually does not work well, but in Lion it came across to be so natural on digital.

Lion is most definitely one of those emotional rollercoaster films where a box of tissues is much needed. By the end the audience was wiping the last bit of their tears and felt the emotional impact immensely.
