April 15th 2016 marks the 104th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. Named for it’s might and power, the ship was deemed unsinkable by its makers. However, three days into it’s journey, Titanic hit an iceberg which changed the course of history. The once mighty voyager is now remembered as an eternal symbol of love thanks to James Cameron’s 1997 classic Titanic. The film starring Oscar winners Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio is considered to be an epic romance which the Indian audience drools over. What if we made a television version of the film? Who do you think would best fit the bill to play such immortal characters? We have the answer to a part of that riddle! Here are some of the iconic character of the Titanic and their Indian counterparts:
Jack Dawson – Vishal Gandhi
Carefree yet cunning, playful yet protective – Jack is truly a one man army. His charisma and boyish charm are enough to win any woman over. Like a refreshing parfait, each layer Jack uncovers is like a pleasant mystery. The very versatile Vishal Gandhi is the ideal Jack. Having played an assortment of characters ranging from the playful Kabir to the manipulative Mihir, he has what it takes to step into the shoes of the Oscar winner.
Rose DeWitt Bukater – Divyanka Tripathi
Grace, elegance, charm and wit. What other name could possibly define all those. Divyanka Tripathi who is currently seen in Yeh Hai Mohabbatein is perfect for the role. Her innocence and intelligent gel well to create the perfect amalgamation needed to portray Rose.
Caledon Nathan “Cal” Hockley – Rohit Roy
Rich, powerful and aristocratic with a hint of charm. When you first look at him, you find him to be dreamy. It is not until later that you realize that the man is an out right snob. There is only one man good enough to play such a multi-dimensional character and that is Rohit Roy.
Ruth DeWitt Bukater – Sudha Chandran
Rose’s widowed mother, who arranges her daughter’s engagement to Cal to maintain her family’s high-society status. She loves her daughter, but believes that social position is more important than having a loving marriage. Her hunger for power and greed for money make her very much like Sudha Chandran’s character in Naagin who betrays her brother and nephew for a precious gem.
Margaret “Molly” Brown – Sweety Walia
Made of new money and old school charm, Molly Brown is one heck of a playful character. The way she treats Jack as her own son kind of reminds you of the nice aunty next door. Sweety Walia who is otherwise known as Pammi Aunty of Yeh Hai Mohabbatein and Bubbles Bua of Bahu Hamari Rajni_Kant is perfect for the role.
Captain Edward John Smith – Sai Ballal
The calm and composed captain of ship had much to offer. His love for his passengers and the RMS Titanic was beyond belief. The man perfect for this job would be Sai Ballal. His iconic fatherly role in Kutumb followed by roles in Paapu Can’t Dance Saala and the most recent Udaan speak for themselves.
Fabrizio De Rossi – Neel Motwani
Here we have the perfect partner for any journey. As Jack’s best friend, not only is Fabrizio his voice of reason, but also his ultimate partner in crime. Neel Motwani, who has played an assortment of characters, including the loveable Dev in Bahu Hamari Rajni_Kant bleed Fabrizio to the core.
Thomas Andrews – Naved Aslam
Prim, proper, a true gentleman – Thomas Andrews was the maker of the ship. While on his journey, Andrews acts as a pillar of support to Rose, who is confused between her heart and mind. His patience and intelligence are much like the unshakable spirit of the RMS Titanic. Naved Aslam, who is best known for his contribution to shows such as Pyaar Kii Yeh Ek Kahanii and Beintehaa, is perfect for the role.
