B-town is bring 2016 with a bang, especially with sports bio-pics!

Sports personalities have become a huge source of inspiration for filmmakers who are game to make films based on them. History has given birth to many heroes across the globe, and most definitely in the sports field. There are so many untold stories about these heroic icons, they have brought real meaning to ‘determination’ and ‘power’.

Coming to India, Jesse Owens’ the much awaited biopic Race released on March 11. World record breaking Olympic gold medalist Jesse Owens has been a timeless global icon. Till this date when fame is fleeting, the four-time gold medal winner’s victory at the 1936 Berlin Olympics still resonates. His performance at the Games was a shining moment that lit up the world. 80 years later, Owens remains one of a handful of Olympic heroes whose name and image are an indelible part of our cultural heritage.

Race starring rising star Stephen James is 2016’s landmark biographical sports drama film based on an incredible true story of Jesse Owens’.

Another biopic role played by Sushant Singh Rajput. He will be portrayed on Paralympic Gold Medalist Murlikant Petkar who won gold at the Commonwealth Games in 1970, and Paralympics in Germany 1972. The army man turned into sportsman Petkar set a world record in the 50m freestyle swimming and at the same games, participated in javelin.

The film is based on the life of former Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin who led the Indian cricket team for most the 1990’s. This role will be played by Emraan Hashmi and directed by Anthony D’souza. Other b-town actors like Prachi Desai will be seen playing the cricketers wife, and Nargis Fakhri as Sangeeta Bijlani.

5. Dhyanchand

Karan Johar who declared that he is making a biopic on Indian hockey legend Dhayan Chand October 2014, but nothing was announced post that time. The hockey player was a three-time Olympic gold medal winner, and was widely popular as ‘The Wizard’ due to his control on the ball.

While India has much enjoyed biopic films like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Mary Kom, and most recently Neerja— I think we are all very excited to see many more biopics this year.
