The amazing designer ushered in Autumn/Winter 2016 on Day 2 of the Amazon India Fashion Week with Earth Song, a spectacular collection proving that sustainable can truly be fashionable. Set against beautiful foliage that brought nature to life, the show transported every individual in the audience to a world where falling leaves dotted the earth in autumn, and the smell of fresh pine evoked memories of time gone by. Models effortlessly walked against this vivid setting, adorning craft and owning tradition in their own unique way. Her Anita Dongre Grassroot brand is a tribute to India’s handcrafted traditions. It believes in slow fashion and follows responsible, eco-friendly and organic processes. It celebrates India’s crafts and weaves by providing a contemporary and sustainable platform for the artisans and helps create livelihoods by partnering with a network of trusted NGOs.
A tribute to the myriad crafts of India, Anita, through her brand Grassroot, retold stories in contemporary tales that were soulful, inspiring and elevating. Nature was clearly the inspiration for the collection and the designer completely and happily surrendered to the colors of the earth, as leaves turned to the hues of dusk, thereby showcasing a hand crafted conscious range that spelled slow fashion masterfully.
An amalgamation of versatile separates, Earth Song plays through classic clinched shirt dresses and shifts, wide-legged jumpsuits and pinafores, structured jackets and draped overlays. It is a constant dialogue, translating traditional poetic motifs into luxury prêt. Marrying the commands of fashion with comfort and sustainability, the designer’s muse is a global woman on the move “whose elegance springs from her dynamism.” Designed to resonate with today’s woman, Earth Song embraces classic separates to suit personal styles and encouraging them to treasure the craft.
Reflecting the natural hues of autumn, the color palette consists of cream, pearl, fawn, granite, black, and pure white blends with an array of indigos. Block prints – an age old technique is revived and reinvented in aesthetic contemporary wonders. Intricate touches of Kantha and rustic metallic highlights, layered artfully and mounted on a canvas of avant garde tales. Imprints of Dabbu, Bagru and Arjak resounded with the melodies of nature. Weaves from bhujodi and Bhagalpur, hand tied bandhani and Shibori lent their tune from well-loved artisans across India.
With a flawless design aesthetic, translating tradition with panache in a magical interplay of layering and age-old techniques; we know that slow fashion is here to stay and Anita Dongre’s collection surely tunes us into the rhythm of nature.
