For decades Barbie has been modeled after blue-eyed, blonde hair, fair skinned women but with time, there has been an increasing demand for Barbies which represent women of all shapes, sizes and skin tones. Today we have Russian Barbies, Indian Barbies, African Barbies but something was still not right. At least until now!
Haneefah Adam, a 24-year-old from Nigeria, posted images to her Instagram account of a brand new kind of Barbie. Filling in the void of the Barbie world was Hijarbie, a Barbie draped in the traditional Islamic head gear – a hijab. Haneefah, who currently has over 13,300 followers on Instagram, began designing and sharing the custom wardrobe to tackle the issue of Islamophobia.
Haneefah hopes that the fashionable act will bring positive awareness to world! One small step fro Barbie, one giant step for true beauty. Way to go Haneefah!
