Featured Lifestyle What's Happenin'

Did you know one Starbucks coffee can feed a child or two!?

I spend a lot of time behind the computer, here in America, and when I read articles about different issues happening in this world, I feel quite helpless sometimes. Of course being able to write here on Urban Asian, I feel I can contribute by creating awareness through the blogging medium.

I came across this amazing cause Gift A Meal.

Faraz Ansari, founder and creator of this simple, yet heartwarming concept is a man of many talents. Faraz is film director and writer. He has received various acceptances to film festivals across the globe for his short film Siberia. Currently he is working towards a TV show for a large channel platform, and is gearing up for his directorial debut film in 2017!

When finding about his cause, I distinctly remember reading a post from Faraz saying,

A meal is Rs. 100, less than $2 and cheaper than your Starbucks latte.

Being a ‘Starbucks-living off coffee kind of girl,’ and reading this post made me realize I really need to stop and rethink where I should really putting that coffee money towards. So I took my first step, and stopped purchasing Starbucks.

Then I just continued to follow Faraz’s journey as he took this initiative forward.

What is Gift A Meal? It’s quite simple; Faraz’s goal is to reach out to the underprivileged children from slums and NGOs and serve them a hearty, nutritious meal.

The first take-off seemed to be rather successful, and beautiful to see through the photographs that were captured.

One day before the take-off, Faraz went out and purchased 25kgs of dry fruits, 2000 different types of chocolates, and lot’s of fruits. In addition to these side items, he had also provided a hearty-home cooked meal.

On January 9, 2016 Faraz went out to various slums and NGOs and began his Gift A Meal journey!

Those who contributed to the meals which Faraz put together may or may not know, but he was able to reach out to more than 500 children across the city of Mumbai. However though, the number of underprivileged children just within Mumbai is a much larger number. There were many more children who wanted to smile, and to be fed. Faraz needed more meals, more volunteers, and much more support!

At the end of the first kick-off of this beautiful cause, he still felt very happy and more importantly all the children who were fed are passing all their love and thankfulness to those who contributed!

The next Gift A Meal edition will take place on the last weekend of February and anyone from around the world is welcome to contribute. Remember 100 Rs. ($2) can feed at least 5 children, and more importantly your morning latte can feed up to 3 or 4 children. Even if you contribute once you will feel like you did a
really good deed.

gam4When I spoke to Faraz he mentioned his dream for Gift A Meal which is,

I plan to do this every month now and hopefully, do it every week and dream of doing it everyday, someday!

If we help towards his dream, we would be able to fulfill little children’s dreams by putting food on their plates.
