#BeYou: Celebrities’ take on self-esteem and self imaging issues!

Self-esteem and self imaging issues have become more prevalent since the inception of social media. While on one hand, a comment filled with admiration and praise is enough to make your day, derogatory comments have gone as far as to cause someone to commit suicide. If these negative comments fail to take a life, they take a soul by targeting ones self worth and suddenly we feel like we are not good enough for this world. A recent incident shook actor Varun Dhawan’s world when a fan claimed she was not stylish enough to take a picture with the actor. It just goes to show how vulnerable we as human beings are. In light of the incident we asked a few celebrities if they or someone they know has been a victim of self imaging issues and what advice they’d like to give to those who are victims? Here is what they had to say:

I personally do not know of anyone who struggled with the issue but I am aware the issue exists and somewhere deep down we are all victims of one inferiority complex or another. But instead of giving advice to those who struggle with the issue, I would like to address their parents. Comparison due to competition is the biggest root cause of self imaging issues. Most people are not confident due to the level of their skill but how the skill is appreciated by their loved ones. If their loved ones are encouraging they will automatically be more confident and unapologetic of their talent and appearance.

My advice to those who struggle with self imaging issues is think as if you own the world and you will make it. I know I did!

There’s only like 5 % perfectly symmetrical people in the world, and yes some them are sportsmen or movie stars, and that is their choice. But the vast majority of us are just simple people living under constant pressure to conform to an unrealistic standard of beauty; and the earlier you learn that you should focus on what you have and not obsess about what you don’t have, the happier you will be. When it comes to body image,I think we should just be happy with the way we look. We shouldn’t really try to conform to any kind of stereotype. Just be happy and hopefully healthy. I take pride in the fact that not just my outer beauty, but my inner beauty makes me different from everyone else. I personally could not be more content and happy with my body image.

I didn’t have that problem with self imaging, but I know people who face this problem on day to day basis. I think the root cause of the issue is our society, and conservative families all around us. Everyone tells you how you should be, what you should become or wear, so we try to become somebody who we are not. Then obviously we are not comfortable in our own skin. we are all the time thinking what we should be, forgetting that we are already unique in our own way, we lose our confidence in the process, become confused. I think we have to realize what we want to do, what we love, what makes us happy. It’s not important to be successful all the time, it’s more important to be happy. If you are “fat” and happy then it’s right for you,if you are unemployed or struggling and happy in it then it’s a right path for you. Remember we are all unique.

The problem of self imaging is not a new one. It’s always been around but these days it with the growing social sites and selfie culture, the problem is becoming more obvious. The most important thing is that one needs to be comfortable with his/her own physical presence. Being fat, thin, dark or short is what we are born with and we have to come to terms with it and live happily. Unless we do that, the complexes will reflect in our everyday activities. These complexes will hinder our personal and professional growth. And they will keep us away from the most important thing in life – being happy. Also most of the time people are worried what others are thinking about them. How others are judging them or what is other people’s opinion about them. Don’t ever think about other people. You are living a life for yourself and only yourself. Don’t let anyone’s thinking, opinion or judgment matter to you. As long as you are happy, nothing else matters. Always remember you are what you think you are. Do small and big things that make you happy. Always feel good and positive about yourself. Love yourself.

One should not be affected by what others think of them. Looks are only secondary, what truly matters in life is wisdom and talent. Talent, especially in the entertainment industry is important. One can achieve “good looks” and “style” but never gain a talent which is not theirs to begin with.
