Sandip Soparrkar talks surrogacy and adoption with Barkha Dutt!

On November 1, renowned Indian choreography Sandip Soparrkar joined journalist Barkha Dutt on her show ‘We the People’ to talk about surrogacy and adoption. Soparrkar, who is now married to supermodel Jesse Randhawa, became the first single man in India to legally adopt a child 9 years ago. He is also the Cause Ambassador for Catalyst for Social Action (CSA), an organization that facilitates adoptions and child care institutions in states like Maharashtra, Odisha, Goa and Madhya Pradesh.

The main topic of conversation on Soparrkar’s episode of ‘We the People’ was the introduction of a new law which limits surrogacy to “infertile, married, and Indian couples,” thereby banning surrogacy for foreign nationals, unmarried couples, the LGBT community, and anyone else who wishes to have a child through surrogacy.

On the show, Soparrkar spoke about couples and single people who become frustrated with the long adoption process and often opt for surrogacy. He requested adoption authorities to avoid unnecessarily complicating adoption procedures and to let surrogacy be a personal choice.

When contacted, Soparrkar said,

“I was truly honored to be a part of Barkha Dutt’s show, she is indeed one dynamic woman. I have expressed my point of view on the show and I sincerely hope that surrogacy or even adoption should not be banned or enforced on anyone, and it should be a choice that should be given to an individual or a couple. Let us regulate and make procedures simpler rather than putting any ban.”

Apart from his choreography career, Soparrkar has been involved in several charities in India and abroad. Before getting involved with CSA, he was Brand Ambassador of American-based child care institution ‘Miracle Foundation’, as well as Prince Charles’ charity ‘Youth Business Initiative’ under the Prince’s Trust NGO in Nigeria.
