According to a 2011 World Health Organisation (WHO) report, one in seven people in India, or 15% of the population is depressed. A 2012 WHO report said that India accounted for the highest number of suicides in the world. Anecdotally it is estimated that 40-50% of suicides in India are due to mental health issues.
Less than one percent of the health budget is allocated to mental health. There is a great need for governments both at the center and at the state level to increase budgetary allocation to mental health.
Private philanthropy has also been less forthcoming in supporting the cause of mental health. However with the realization now of the serious challenge that India faces on this front it is hoped that more & more individuals and corporates will step forward to support various initiatives in the area of mental health.
The Foundation is glad to announce that Ms. Janhavi Nilekani has committed a sum of 1 crore to the Foundation. Janhavi said
`This is my first large philanthropic commitment and I am glad to contribute to a cause which I think is very important and will increasingly become one of the biggest health challenges for the country.’
The Live Love Laugh Foundation would like to thank Janhavi Nilekani for making this commitment and hopes that this is a sign of more individuals and corporates realizing the huge challenge the country faces in the area of mental health.
