Big B issues statement amidst UP pension scandal!

When the Uttar Pradesh government announced that so long as the Samajwadi Party is in power, recipients of the Yash Bharti Samman award—the state’s highest honor—would receive a pension of Rs. 50,000 per month for the rest of their lives, Twitter erupted in chaos. As past award winners, this would qualify Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, and Abhishek Bachchan to each receive this monthly pension, a decision that did not sit well with the public.

Addressing these concerns, Amitabh Bachchan issued this statement:

“Ref; the announcement in the media today by the UP Govt for pension to YashBharati Award winners:
Whereas I respect the UP Govt’s honour of the Yash Bharati Award to members of my family, and their decision as per reports in the press, for providing pension of Rs 50, 000 per month to each recipient, I am requesting the UP Govt., with all humility, to redirect the entire amount designated for my family towards any noble charitable scheme or cause that benefits the poor and the needy. I shall be writing to the Chief Minister in this regard, in a separate communication.”

We applaud Big B for taking action, and hope that the funds go toward a worthy cause!
