How did Kaun Kitne Paani Mein happen for you?

MissRoshni and team, first off I have to say that UA is the most exciting desi web site and that’s where I like to go get my Urban and Bollywood news from! With regards to the question, a while ago a composer I frequently collaborate with, a girl named Subhi from Chicago sent me a song of hers named, “Ho Naa“. I loved the romantic vibe and melody and came up with a new chorus for the song. A demo was recorded with music arranger Lyton in Mumbai and Subhi later reached out to director Nila Madhab Panda who was looking for a love song for his film’s characters/lovers Kunal Kapoor and Radhika Apte’s in “Kaun Kitne Paani Mein.” Madhab and his creative team along with producer Supratik Roy liked our song a lot and decided to use it in his film. I just met actor Kunal Kapoor two days ago at the private screening and he said its one of his favorite new love songs!

Ho Naa is a beautiful track with a light romantic feel. What was your approach to composing the song?

As mentioned Subhi came up with the song’s beautiful lilting verse melody and she had a chorus that I felt could become even better and more memorable so what I composed for the chorus became the final chorus melody in the song. She also had a big hand in the instrumental track overseeing it’s melody and feel and did a great job there too along with arranger Lyton. My buddy Rana Mazumdar over saw the vocal session with A-list singer Shilpa Rao at Phatbox Studio in Mumbai with Subhi and me on Skype & Hangout/Facetime (wi-fi in Mumbai is moody as heck) in the US in real time. Subhadeep Mitra mixed the song really well and captured the feel totally. Singers Yashika Sikka & Priyanka Singh sang the outro chorus’s backing vocal.

I’ve written and composed the melodies for the mega ton hit chorus (chorus only and credited as Indee on it) for Pritam’s song “Twist” from “Love Aaj Kal” and club smash “Aai Paapi” from “Kismat Connection” so I have a feel for choruses.

How difficult is it for a romantic track to find its identity in a satire like Kaun Kitne Paani Mein?

Since Bollywood audiences are used to romantic tracks if there’s a love story there’s a song no matter what the film’s genre. In this satire gem of a film the song’s visualization is beautifully edited and Subhi’s lyrics fit nicely and enhance the love story and song with its gentle flowing verse that goes into the chorus melody.

Kaun Kitney Paani Mein deals with the most critical challenge facing the 21st century – water!,  directed by Nila Madhab Panda, funded by One Drop Foundation, Montreal and produced by Eleeanora Images and One Drop Foundation, the film released in India on August 28th!
