Shilpa Shetty may be known around the world for her dance moves and acting, but it seems her hubby, Raj Kundra, is now going to be known for having made some wrong moves in the world of cricket! A panel of the Supreme Court of India, headed by Justice Lodha, has suspended the former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team official, Mr. Gurunath Meiyappan, as well Rajasthan Royals (RR) co-owner, Mr. Raj Kundra, with regards to any and all cricketing activity for life! The two were found guilty of misconduct for betting and spot-fixing scandals.
The committee made such a drastic decision because it felt that both Gurunath and Raj brought shame to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the IPL. Additionally, the committee felt that the two have damaged the faith of the people in the honesty of the sport, and that they have been disrespectful to the world of cricket. Indian Premier League (IPL) rules state that a franchisee can be punished if the team owners are found guilty of betting or betting related activities. The franchisees in this case, cannot take part in the IPL for a period of two years under the current ownership.
Justice Lodha stated, “The fact that Meiyappan was integral part of CSK, he ought not to have indulged in corrupt practices. Any person who has true passion for the game will never be involved in betting. Gurunath has not only indulged in betting but he has brought disrepute to cricket & the IPL. Being the face if franchise, Gurunath’s actions reflects on the owners India Cements.”
The verdict does not seem as harsh if we recall that the two have been at the center of controversy before too! Back in 2013, the IPL found them both guilty of betting! Looks like the courts can no longer forgive their mistakes!
