Shweta Subram Honored as South Asian of the Year 2015!

Shweta Subram is one artist who has proven that talent plus humility can go a long way!  Often regarded as a role model for the South Asian community in Canada, Shweta was recently chosen as the “South Asian of the Year” (2015) by Zee TV Canada and Maple Diversity Communications.  This honor was presented to her at their recent Mahotsav event in Canada, where Shweta also performed live!

Shweta was presented this honor for her achievements in the world of music and performing arts.  Her journey started after she won the title of Best Singer in North America by Sangam Kala group, following which she appeared on Indian television shows, and at the IIFA Awards alongside Salim-Sulaimain in 2011. Shweta debuted as a playback singer in Bollywood alongside Ayushmann Khurrana with the song, “Dil-e-Nadaan” in the movie Hawaizaada (see here). She also lent her voice for a Star Plus soap opera, Tere Sheher Mein.

Besides her contributions to the world of Indian entertainment, Shweta has collaborated with musicians in the West. She was contacted by The Piano Guys to create an Indian adaptation of Swedish House Mafia’s Don’t You Worry Child (see here), which has crossed 12 million views on YouTube. In addition, she has collaborated with Shankar Tucker for an original, “Mere Saajan Sun Sun”.

Shweta’s commitments have her shuttling between Toronto and Mumbai, and her shows take her around the world. This year, she was chosen to perform the Indian and Canadian National Anthems for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reception in Canada (see here). She is also the youngest vocalist of Indian origin to have performed at the esteemed Carnegie Hall in New York!

Shweta is grateful for the honor by Zee TV Canada and Maple Diversity Communications. The award was presented by Niraj Sinha, MD of Maple Diversity Communications. Shweta believes that every child should pursue their dreams and every successful person should give back to the community.

Congratulations to Shweta on a well-deserved award! As I’ve said before, Shweta is one artist to watch! Keep it locked to Urban Asian as we follow Shweta’s journey!
