Bend It Like Beckham: The Musical – Gurinder Chadha Interview

Gurinder Chadha is one of the most internationally recognized directors in our South Asian community.  She shot to fame with “Bhaji on the Beach”, but truly became an international icon with the hit film, “Bend It Like Beckham” back in 2002.  The film became popular world over and dealt with the story of Jess Bhamra, the daughter of orthodox Sikh parents, who opts to carve her own path and follow her dream of playing soccer (football) as opposed to focusing on her parents’ traditionalism.  The film made international stars out of its cast – most notably including Parminder Nagra (“Jess”), Keira Knightley (“Jules”), and Archie Panjabi (“Pinky”).  Now, Gurinder has brought the film to the iconic West End theatre district of London with “Bend It Like Beckham: The Musical“, in what I would consider an upgraded version of the film.  The new cast is perfect for the roles, and has added their own flavor to the characters.  I had a chance to view the play (which I loved) as well as to interview Gurinder and cast (interviews will be up soon). Gurinder and I talked about the journey from the film to the theatre, and all things Bend It!  Personally, I think the cast and crew of the musical does full justice to their respective roles.  The musical is just as amazing as the film, and as I say in the interview, is more immersive as an experience.  It is a must watch!  Check out the interview with Gurinder below and be sure to go see “Bend It Like Beckham: The Musical” in London!
