Whoa! Peepli Live’s co-director, Mahmood Farooqui has been under investigation on Saturday after a US based research scholar along with a senior US embassy official filed an FIR against Farooqui for allegedly sexually assaulting her. Farooqui was then produced in court and put under judicial custody for 14 days.
Farooqui is married to screenwriter and director, Anusha Rizvi, who directed Peepli Live. According to reports, the incident took place on March 26 of this year when Farooqui invited the woman to his Sukhdev Vihar home for a party, where he allegedly sexually assaulted her. The woman left the country within 10 days of the incident, and returned 3 months later to file the FIR.
During the time that she left the country and until she returned to file the FIR, the complainant claims she exchanged e-mails with Farooqui where she accuses him of sexually assaulting her and he reportedly replied accepting his mistake and seeking forgiveness.
Farooqui’s wife, Anusha released a statement where she claims the allegations are “manipulated” and “false”.
“A complaint has been registered against Mahmood Farooqui. The moment he heard about it he presented himself at the concerned police station. He was thereafter taken into custody. The complaint is manipulated and false. We don’t want to make any further comments on the matter because the case is under investigation. We will wait for the court’s decision where the actual truth of the matter will come out. In the meanwhile we are thankful for the show of support from friends, colleagues and well-wishers. We are determined to fight this till the reality is presented before the people. We are very sure of it.”
