Music Review: Guddu Rangeela

The soundtrack for the upcoming film Guddu Rangeela has been released! Guddu Rangeela is an upcoming Indian comedy film directed by Subhash Kapoor. It stars Aditi Rao Hydari, Arshad Warsi, Amit Sadh, and Ronit Roy in lead roles. The film is presented by Fox Star Studios and produced by Sangeeta Ahir from Mangal Murti Films. Music has been composed by Amit Trivedi with lyrics by Irshad Kamil.

The title track “Guddu Rangeela” – rendered by Divya Kumar and Amit Trivedi – has interesting lyrics and an addictive main instrumental chorus line. In the middle, Amit Trivedi introduces some rock elements with electric guitar.

The second song, “Sooiyan”, is the melodious track in this album. Sung by none other than Arijit Singh and Chinmayi Sripada, this song starts mellow but then a peppy percussive base picks up about a minute through the song. This song has potential to be reconfigured for acapella, particularly because there are already some acapella sections in it!

Rendered by Chinmayi Sripada and Shahid Mallya, “Sahebaan” is surprisingly quite similar to “Sooiyan” but has softer beats and a bit more of an island feel to it. Quite frankly, in the Bollywood music industry, Amit Trivedi has proven that he is talented enough to compose a song that’s more different from another song of his in the same album. Thus, despite Chinmayi and Shahid’s melodious voices, this song comes off a bit flat.

The last song “Mata Ka Email”, sung by Gajender Phogat, is considerably different from the other songs in this soundtrack. It has aspects of qawwali and bhajan singing, with the call-and-response structure. The Hinglish lyrics are a bit strange but it seems obvious that this is meant to be a comedic, not serious, song.

Guddu Rangeela set to release on July 3, 2015.
