Deepika can carry off almost everything she wears!

India’s ace designer, the gorgeous Ritu Beri has worked with many A-lister Bollywood actresses. The designer, who was recently honoured with the ‘Order of Civil Merit’, by the Spanish government shares her expertise on fashion trends this year with Pratishtha Malhotra.

A lot of trends have come back again from back in the day, be it high-waist pants or crop tops… Which is your favourite trend which has made a comeback?

The past few years or so, crop tops have made a major comeback and it doesn’t look like they are going away anytime soon. While the trend is definitely enticing it’s also one that’s easy to go wrong with. Baring a little midriff is cute but at an appropriate time and when done in a tasteful way. However showing too much skin may not suit you. About interpreting the crop top, I feel it’s an elegant look when one sees a little more than a peep of a toned midriff. Cropped top with high-waist pants or frilly voluminous skirts worn with a thick waist belt has always been my favourite look.

If we speak about the year 2014, there were a lot of fashion trends and fashionistas who made waves. Did you find someone or something very appealing?
Deepika Padukone, I personally feel, can carry off almost everything she wears. Her style shouts class.

Fashion has changed radically in films and otherwise, which change are you particularly happy about?

I love the mix and match of Indian ensembles worn with a western silhouette. For example, a well-tailored sharp jacket when worn with an Indian skirt or a patiala salwar or even a sari can look amazing.

Which trend needs a change desperately as it has been done to death?

According to me, I think the Indian Anarkali needs to be go! It’s not the most flattering look and it does nothing for a woman’s shape. I am not particularly a fan of this look.

In your opinion, which fashion trend from those fancy days of yore would make a comeback this year?

I feel the fitted kurta with high slits teamed with a fitted churidaar worn in the past by the likes of Sharmila Tagore, Sadhana, Mumtaz, et al will definitely make a comeback.
