Bollywood witnessed many big banner releases in 2014. Big names bring with themselves an equal amount of expectations which either result in success or failure at the box office. Some get their act right and some just don’t. Not everyone makes a profit so we’ve compared the cost to what the box office pulled in to find the top money making films of 2014!
Kick:
Expected to take box office by storm, Kick really stood up to its expectations. The movie that released during Eid, managed to garner life time box office collections of 231 Cr. plus. Also the fact that the satellite rights for Kick were sold to Star TV for a whooping price automatically made up for its production cost and Salman Khan’s remuneration. Our Verdict: Blockbuster (without any doubt!)
Queen:
Undisputedly the underdog among all the movies that released this year, Queen impressed the critics to no end. It made 10 Cr. in its opening weekend which in itself was a huge feat considering the movie was solely shouldered by Kangana Ranaut. The movie that was made on relatively smaller budget and that purely garnered attention through word of mouth publicity, Queen made a nett figure of 61Cr. and 92.97Cr gross including worldwide collections. Our Verdict: Super Hit.
2 States:
Sajid Nadiadwala and Karan Johar scored big time with this movie based on Chetan Bhagat’s book by the same name. The movie that garnered 11.75Cr.on the opening day went on to gather a life time box office collection of 104Cr (excluding ancilliary rights). That was more than double of its entire production cost put together. Our Verdict: A Super hit
Ek Villain:
Director Mohit Suri’s gamble of an unusually fresh pairing in Siddharth Malhotra and Shraddha Kapoor paid off huge dividends that showed up in box office numbers. The movie opened up with 16.72Cr.on its opening day and raked in a life time collection of 105.50Cr. This again was more than double of its investment. Our Verdict: Super Hit!
Haider:
As expected by everyone Vishal Bharadwaj’s Haider did extremely well at the box office. The movie opened up to a box collection of 6.14Cr. gathering 26.78Cr.over the weekend. All in all, the entire movie made a decent 58.30Cr. which covered all its production costs. Haider was well conceptualized film that definitely won audience hearts. Our Verdict: Hit.
Heropanti:
Star kid and veteran actor Jackie Shroff’s son Tiger Shroff’s debut film Heropanti certainly took off on a very promising note. Heropanti scored at the box office on its opening day with a whooping collection of 6.63Cr. This was the 5th best opening of the year, that too with a debut male and female actor! The movie went on to make 35.91Cr.in the first week itself and 65.26 Cr. in worldwide box office collections! Our Verdict: Definitely a Hit!
The Xpose:
Himesh Reshamiya’s The Xpose got a fairly good opening at the box office raking in 4.50Cr considering the response it got from the audience and the modest budgets it was made on. The movie earned a life time box office collection of 22 Cr. Our Verdict: Though it had an average run, but in terms of profitability the movie did exceedingly well.
Humshakals:
Sajid Khan’s Humshakals had pretty good opening numbers to show. The movie made 40.13Cr. in the opening weekend itself. Though, Humshakals slowed down towards the second and third weeks, it still managed to garner a total of 77.58Cr.in worldwide collections. This figure nearly covered all production and marketing costs. Our Verdict: This film was commercial hit, loved by the masses and recovered all its expenses.

Gunday:
This film was made on a budget of 50Cr. and ended up making 81Cr. which makes it hugely successful if box office numbers are concerned. Yash Raj Films (YRF) definitely profited from this movie even though it was made on a mid level budget considering Bollywood standards and the movies made today. Our Verdict: Semi Hit
Mary Kom:
The movie got a huge release and it was screened in 2900-3000 screens which is huge for film that has a female protagonist. Though the film opened to average numbers it grossed 29Cr. nett over the weekend which is a really good opening considering the genre. Further on the movie had a total worldwide box office collection of 104.10Cr. gross.
Our Verdict: The movie was a hit and did extremely well commercially.
