Internationally renowned dancer and choreographer Aakash Odedra has received over 300,000 views within a week of being featured on global website TED.com.
The 28-year-old was invited to perform at the official TED Global conference in Rio De Janeiro back in October 2014 to showcase an extract from his work Murmur.
Speaking about the opportunity, Aakash said:
“It was an absolute honor to be invited to perform at TED, which has featured some of the biggest talents and well-known speakers from across the globe. I think it’s a great platform for people like me to showcase the art of dance to a much wider audience.”
Choreographed by Aakash and Australian choreographer Lewis Major, Murmurexplores the misconceptions of dyslexia through visual design, light, sound and movement in collaboration with Arts Electronica Futurelab.
Aakash was diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age and found education at school challenging. However, this did not deter him from expressing himself, with dance – instead of the conventional written language – becoming his preferred mode of expression.
As a choreographer, he has been commissioned to create pieces for James Brown: Get on the Good Foot (Apollo Theater, NewYork), The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the closing of the London Cultural Olympiad. He also has a number of awards and accolades to his name including; a Danza&Danza Award (Italy), Dora Performance Award (Canada), Audience Award Dance Week 2013 (Croatia), Sky Arts Academy Scholarship, and recently won a Bessie Award for Best Performer in October 2014.
He has been featured by press worldwide including; The Guardian, The Huffington Post, The Wall Street Journal and Elle India amongst many more for his outstanding work both as a dancer and a choreographer. Well done to Aakash on this great project!
