Oscar de la Renta left a major impact in the world of fashion. Every red carpet seemed to have at least one star wearing a classic Oscar de la Renta gown. Sadly, the legendary fashion designer passed away on Monday at the age of 82. His wife has confirmed that he died from complications from cancer. A void will definitely be felt in the world of fashion.
de la Renta was born in the Dominican Republic, but left for Spain when he was around 18. He had initially moved there to learn painting, but fate had other plans for him and Spain is where he began his fashion career. Fashion was in his future, and he ultimately got an apprenticeship with Cristobal Balenciaga, Spain’s most celebrated couturier. Learning all about fashion, he eventually made his own label. However, it was not until the 1960s when the young designer truly established his name and brand as he began to dress former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis – a lady who is still considered the first lady of fashion. Other first ladies were also dressed by him including Nancy Reagan, Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton. Significantly, he most recently had become known for designing Sarah Jessica Parker’s red carpet gowns.
May he rest in peace.
