Bridging over to the Indian side of music is common for Pakistani artists but to be associated with international names is extraordinary. Pakistani rock band Roxen’s lead singer, Mustafa Zahid, however, is an exception. After numerous Bollywood hits such as most recent “Bhula Dena” from musical blockbuster hit movie “Aashiqui 2” and his break through hit “Tera Mera Rishta” from Mahesh Bhatt’s “Awarapan”, Mustafa Zahid has recently merged with the international music industry by providing vocals for the remix single to world known Spanish and English pop superstar, Enrique Iglesias’s latest track, “Turn the Night Up”
A composed Mustafa Zahid said the break came after his band was signed by Universal Music records earlier this year.
“It was a fabulous experience. My band Roxen was signed by Universal Music India who will be launching our next album. At that time, we had discussions regarding collaborations and exploring new horizons.”
The single “Turn the Night Up” is from Enrique’s 10th studio album produced by “The Cataracs” (Selena Gomez, Snoop Dogg). The Bollywood remix version, mixed by DJ AKS, is infused with instruments like the dhol and tumbi and features upbeat vocals from Mustafa Zahid.
Mustafa said this moment of truth came after he spoke with his mother.
“I received a call from my mother saying that I am on the Pakistani news channels, and they are discussing about my single and international collaboration. This is not the first time I have been in the news, but the manner in which my mother spoke about this to me this time around was very assuring and different. There are a few moments in life that parents are proud about their children, and this was one of those for me.”
As any artist contemplates, Mustafa thought long about this opportunity and particularly about his fans as he ventured into a new musical genre.
“The feedback I have received from my fans puts an end to the apprehension. Everyone should understand that we artists need to experiment and explore new sounds and music. I have been blessed with fans who truly appreciate that I have tried something new and it’s been a hit so far.”
Mustafa Zahid and his rock band Roxen are currently working on a pop-rock album that will have nine original tracks and a remix which he states will be releasing very soon.
“We are trying to spread the message of love and peace. Music is borderless, and we are trying to spread the message of love, not just for the people of India and Pakistan, but people around the globe.”
