Homemade moisturizers

Wondering how to make your own cost-efficient, natural, and effective moisturizer?  Here are three steps to make your own favorite homemade nourishing moisturizer.

STEP 1

CHOOSE A BASE / CARRIER OIL

The base, or the carrier oil, is what takes up 2/3 of the moisturizer. They are easily absorbed, light in texture and are not greasy. They generally open up the pores and allow the skin to absorb the other ingredients mixed with the base or carrier oil.

  • Jojoba oil – Great for dry, oily, normal and acne-prone skin
  • Argan oil – Great for dry, oily, normal and acne-prone skin
  • Almond oil – Great for dry, aging and normal skin
  • Hemp seed oil – Great for dry, normal, oily skin

STEP 2

CHOOSE  A NOURISHING OIL

Nourishing oils are ones which are used to heal certain skin condition’s and are more expensive than the carrier oils.

  • Tea Tree oil – Great for acne-prone skin, scars/ wounds, anti-bacterial, treating insect bites.
  • Borage oil – High in Oleic acids, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and it’s great for acne and oily skin as well.
  • Peppermint oi l- Has a cooling effect, increases blood flow, anti-bacterial and it’s great for hot climatic conditions.
  • Neem oil – anti-bacterial, great for scars and acne conditions
  • Tamanu oil – Promotes formation of new tissue, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, accelerates wound healing.

STEP 3

CHOSE YOUR FAVORITE ESSENTIAL OIL

Essential oils are taken in small amounts; a few drops goes a long way.

  • Lavender oil –  Soothing, anti-aging, great for dry skin, and stress
  • Rose Geranium – Anti-aging, natural astringent, has a cooling effect, good for all skin types
  • Rosemary – Great for oily and acne-prone skin.

MAKING THE HOMEMADE MOISTURIZER

  • Take 2/3 of the carrier/ base oil in a glass bottle
  • Add the nourishing oil till the bottle is almost full
  • Add 4-6 drops of your favorite essential oil

Store it in a cool, dry place away from the sun.
