Bollywood What's Happenin'

*Exclusive* Interview with Kai Po Che!’s Raj Yadav

A few days ago we conducted an interview with Amit Sadh from “Kai Po Che!”  Although the movie does not boast of superstars like one of the Khans, Khannas, or Kumars, the film has still been been intriguing the masses, and looks like it will be the first big hit of 2013.  The film is based on the novel “The Three Mistakes of My Life” by Chetan Bhagat, is directed by Abhishek Kapoor and the screenplay is written by Chetan Bhagat, Abhishek Kapoor, Supratik Sen, and Pubali Chaudhari.  The movie stars Raj Kumar Yadav, Amit Sadh, Sushant Singh Rajput, and Amrita Puri as the leads.

In the second installment of our “Kai Po Che!” Interview Series we chat with actor Raj Kumar Yadav.  Yadav began his acting career in theater and went on to work in Bollywood. He debuted in Dibakar Banerjee’s “Love Sex Aur Dhokha” in 2010. These movies were followed by “Ragini MMS”, “Shaitan”, “Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 2”, and “Talaash”. Now, he is one of the three main male leads in “Kai Po Che!” Read on below as he gives us insight into the “Kai Po Che!” experience!

rajyadavUA: From the main male leads, you have the most experience in Bollywood (debuted in LSD 2010 and have since done 7 more films, inc Kai Po Che). Which has been your most demanding role?

All the characters have been equally challenging as all the characters I have done till date are very different from my personality, but ya, learning Accents and culture for films like “Kai Po Che, “Gangs of Wasseypur”, “Shaitan” were a little difficult as I was very conscious not to make them cliche accent and to keep them very real.

UA: You’ve played quite an array of characters. What is it that you look for in a script before signing and what drew you to Kai Po Che?

For me, I see how much the story excites me or moves me . I have to connect to it only then h can do it and then comes my character how interesting it is.  For “Kai Po Che” I was very excited with the story as i have read the book long back when it came out and liked it a lot .

rajyadav3UA: How were you selected for Kai Po Che? Had you read the Bhagat novel before you were offered the script?

Our casting director Mukesh Chhabra called me for screen test as he was quite sure that I can be Govind and I gave the screen test and as I got to know later Gattu sir really liked it and I was on for the film .

UA: The crew and cast of Kai Po Che are fairly young. Do you think this fact positively affected the movie?

Well definitely the crew was pretty young and the energy was very much high on set at all the time specially Gattu Sir . We were shooting in 45 degrees but there was never this tired feeling on set . Everyone was just working towards one goal to make a good film and m really happy that we have achieved it .

UA: Which actors and actresses (Bollywood/Hollywood) do you wish you will work with in the future?

In Bollywood I have worked with two of my favorites Aamir Khan and Manoj Bajpayee.  Now, I would love to work with Irrfan Khan and in Hollywood I would love love to work with Daniel Day Lewis and Robert Deniro .

Rajkumar-YadavUA: Tell our readers a bit about the character you play in the film and how you prepared for the role.

My characters name is Govind Patel. He is an ordinary Gujarati boy who everyone can relate to. He doesn’t have many desires in life but only one to be a successful businessman. I started with working on language and accent and then got to know about the Gujarati culture . I make my whole character background about his upbringing his relationship with other characters his whole life history that really helps and after that I leave it for set to see my natural instincts to work, to react naturally to my fellow co actors and to just present in the moment and living it truthfully .

UA: What is your favorite moment from filming Kai Po Che and how was the experience working with your fellow actors? Any funny stories you can share with us?

It was an unforgettable experience. Everyday is a wonderful memory.  I think this is one of my film which is really close to my heart and am really proud of.

UA: Thank Raj Kumar for the lovely interview.  We wish you all the best in your career and with the film!
