When Aamir Khan’s name is connected to any project; whether it is a film, a TV show or even a commercial – expectations soar the skies. Such has also been expected from his latest release, Talaash.
The introductory titles depict the whole Mumbai nightlife in a very genuine and true sense. From the streets to the drugs to the whole adult market visuals, it is very well showcased. The film clearly makes a point to keep you on the edge of your seats in suspense and thrill for most of its journey.
The constant thrills and superb acting by all actors provide for a great cinematic experience. Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar have done an impressive job telling a tale of numerous characters and their lives. A sad, stressed and strict police officer, Surjan Shekhawat (Aamir Khan) deals with his family, his past, his career and many other humans and non-humans during the 139 minutes on screen. His simplicity as an actor and the preciseness that he puts into each dialogue and scene is clearly represented. From a simple smirk during a sarcastic punch line or a dramatic interaction between other individuals, Khan will deliver.
Rank Mukherji (Roshni) yet again proves to be extremely confident and versatile with her selection of roles and how she carries them into their character. She deviates from the overly glamorous look that Bollywood starlets portray and plays an extremely sober and true housewife to Khan. Maintaining this genuineness, their relationship in the story is extremely trustworthy making even the most simplest of scenes full of life. Numerous instances where they are arguing and fighting amongst each other definitely add to the chemistry required by the script.
Talaash does not completely follow a typical Bollywood script and this is where Aamir Khan and his expertise along with his ‘perfection’ come in handy. It is a film that both the average cinemagoer can enjoy and an independent/meaningful cinema enthusiast can appreciate.
There are mentions of supernatural forms and of the paranormal which is the mold of the script. Reaction to this is based on the individuality of each viewer and how they perceive this to be according to their belief – so not much can be commented on that. The story revolves around the death of Khan and Mukherji’s son and how they both are blaming each other and themselves for this devastation. As the story develops and unfolds all broken ends join. The death of their son, tragic accident of a celebrity, bitter couple drama, red light district and its nightlife, strict police system amongst with numerous other smaller but important incidents clash and combine together to form a well thought out script to a mature cinematic production.
The likes of Kareena Kapoor (Rosie) and Nawazuddin Siddiqui (Tehmur) provide with exactly what they are asked for and truly deliver. Siddiqui’s talent is unmatched by numerous other actors who have been in the industry for decades and his each scene and dialogue is to be applauded. He does in a way carry a small backbone to the story and his performance should not be missed. Kapoor as Rosie is also credible but at points and this might possibly be due to what her character asks for, can be somewhat either unreal and over the top. The background score and music provided by Ram Sampath is of top quality and takes you back directly to the streets of Mumbai. Dialogues written by Farhan Akhtar and Anurag Kashyap are very quirky and intriguing at the same time. Completed on a budget of INR 40 crore (USD 7.28 million), the film was able to receive INR 69.56 crore (USD 12.66) in its first week of collections. Khan has returned to the big screen with a bang and we shall be hearing and seeing Talaash receive numerous recognitions and awards for this year.
