Exclusive Interview: Apache Indian at Basement Bhangra, NYC

Who would have considered fusing Bhangra and Reggae?  Surprisingly though, the fusion of the two genre’s of music have produced some bumping tracks over the years. The originator of this so called”Raggamuffin” or  “BhangraMuffin” genre, Apache Indian has provided the global audience with such a stature of international music that is very much commendable.

UrbanAsian was lucky to meet and chat with him regarding his family, career, future and everything else in between. The Don Raja was performing love in front of numerous fans at Dj Rekha’s acclaimed monthly Bhangra party, ‘Basement Bhangra’ in downtown New York City.

Starting off in the 1980’s just playing around with sound systems, Apache Indian, later turned into a popular dancehall DJ. He didn’t record his first single, “Movie over India,” until 1990, then  followed it up with hits like “Chok There” and “Don Raja.”  Apache Indian has not only worked with artists from all backgrounds from A. R. Rahman and Asha Bhosle to Sean Paul and artists like Boyz II Men and Blackstreet! The versatile artists has racked up quite a list of achievements as well! The latest being the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Awards at the 2011 UK Asian Music Awards.
