Yash Chopra: The end of a Bollywood Romance

The man; the legend who defined Bollywood and etched the soul and emotions of passion, romance, family, culture, music and life onto the magical silver screen; Yash Chopra is no longer with us. His melodious works will forever remain in the hearts and minds of anyone and everyone who is even familiar with Hindi cinema. Chopra is undoubtedly one of the world’s most influential filmmakers and has provided with some of the biggest blockbusters in Bollywood, both commercially and critically.

 

Yash Chopra, the youngest of eight children was born in Lahore, British India; which is now Pakistan. He is brother to B.R. Chopra who is also an eminent film producer and journalist, most known for the epic television mega series of the late 1980s; Mahabarat. He also went on to produce Yash Chopra’s debutante directorial motion picture in the year of 1959 titled Dhool ka Phool. This was a multi-starrer film with great performances by Mala Sinha, Rajendra Kumar, Nanda and Ashok Kumar. After this, Chopra had set the trend for multi-starrer films that went on to prove extremely positively in the industry. Ensemble cast films such as Waqt, Kabhie Kabhie and Silsila back in the days and the more recently; Darr, Dil To Pagal Hai and Veer Zaara are just to name a few. In a career that spanned over 40 years, Chopra has produced more than 50 films and directed over 20.

Despite the raw talent of Bollywood superstars; Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan; Yash Chopra, through his films that they worked on had a huge hand in their success and achievement of where they are today. During this process both Bachchan and Khan had attained more than just a professional relation with the Ambassador of Romance in Bollywood. Khan and Chopra have worked together in numerous mega-hits and stay true to their tag as one of the best director-actor duo till date. Their association began in the year of 1993 with Darr in which Khan portrayed the character of an obsessive lover. The film, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaeynge is not only their top hit, but this all time blockbuster is also the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema. Yash Chopra’s final Bollywood romance, Jab Tak Hai Jaan starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma is all set for a Diwali release on November 13th, 2012.

On his passing away, Khan mentioned that he had lost his father all over again. Khan was in the ambulance along with Yash Chopra’s director son Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar as he was transported in an ambulance from Lilavai Hospital to Bandra, Mumbai. Yash Chopra was admitted at the hospital for dengue and multiple organ failures. He breathed his last breath at 5:30pm in the evening of the 21st of October. On the 22nd of October his body was taken to the Yash Raj Studios and then to his residence in Juhu, Mumbai after which his body will be cremated.

Yash Chopra not only filled our cinema theaters and homes with love, respect and joy but he gave the sheer confidence to people all over to actually fall in love and believe in it. His storytelling provided with such a command that love does exist and it can happen to anyone. Both youngsters and elders alike will miss his presence immensely. He filled the hearts and minds of all with endless dreams, possibilities and ideas. Chopra’s demise is a big heartbreak to the whole world especially his family, the Hindi film industry, his fans as well as aspiring directors, writers, producers and actors that dreamed of working directly with him. The respect and passion that all of us have in our hearts and lives for this legend will never be afar from us no matter where he his and how much time has elapsed. May god bless his soul.
