From gender injustice in 1997’s Mrityudand to caste-based educational seat reservation in last year’s Aarakshan, he has made his stamp in Bollywood over the last decade as the filmmaker whose films carry a conscience, a commentary, and a relevance to real life issues. Prakash Jha’s newest offering promises no less: Chakravyuh, releasing in theaters on Dussehra this year (Oct 24), weaves its narrative amidst the Naxalite groups and their violence-filled movement against India’s political, social and economic systems.
The story hones in on two friends, policemen who find themselves on opposite sides of the war when one of them, in the process of infiltrating a Naxal group, is eventually converted to their ideology.
Abhay Deol and Om Puri are no strangers to hard-hitting or statement-making films, but we’re curious to see how Arjun Rampal fares as a devoted police officer torn between commitment to his job and loyalty to his newly-Naxalite friend (Deol). We’re also looking forward to seeing some much-needed, hard-hitting female performances, hoping that Esha Gupta and Anjali Patil can do justice to their respective roles as a cop and a hardcore Naxal commander.
