Some people avoid controversy at all costs, but others create it – whether intentionally or unintentionally! Falling into the latter category is the internationally acclaimed South Asian fusion band “JoSH”, based in Montreal, Canada.
The band is comprised of members Rup Magon and Qurram Hussain. Rup founded JoSH in 1996 with his brother, Rik Magon, and good friend Shiraz ‘Shazi’ Hussain. Two years later, in 1998, Qurram ‘q’ Hussein was added to the band. In 2000, Rup and Q decided to branch out and embarked on their own path for JoSH without Rik and Shiraz.
Following several hit albums and songs, the duo have once again raised the bar with a stellar performance of their next single “Meri Dua“. The video is a house remix of the original from their latest album “Beyond Kismat“.
Rup and Q both have given powerful acting and vocal performances in the video. Seems benign enough, right? Well, the music may be fairly benign, but the content of the video has caused certain groups in India and Pakistan to question it’s viewing suitability. The video, produced by Tom Glass Pictures, portrays real-life aspects of relationships by using scenes of betrayal, intoxication, and violence.
When asked if the video should be considered controversial, Magon replied,
“What’s controversial to one is real-life to another. It is what it is.”
