Bollywood Featured What's Happenin'

R.I.P. Meenakshi Thapar

When I checked my mail and the news a couple hours ago I came across the most disgusting news item I have read in a long time – that of the tragic murder of Meenakshi Thapar, 26, who had made her Bollywood debut in 2011 with the movie 404.  I couldn’t get myself to write about it until now because it’s just so horrible.

According to press reports, Meenakshi Thapar, who was working in Madhur Bhandarkar’s upcoming movie “Heroine“, was kidnapped by her co-star, Amit Jaiswal, 36, and his girlfriend Preeti Surin, who had overheard her discussing how she comes from a wealthy family.  So, the two set up a scheme to extort money from her rich parents.  Reports suggest that they invited her on a trip to Groakhpur with them, held her hostage, and demanded that her parents pay them 1,500,000 Rupees ($28,000).  In addition, they threatened them saying that if they did not pay the amount, they would force her into pornography.

Meenakshi’s mother paid them 60,000 Rupees (a little over $1000), but this did not satisfy the greedy criminals.  Instead, finding this amount insufficient, they strangled the young actress and beheaded her.  Some reports suggest that they hacked her body into pieces, dumped her torso in water, and threw her head out of a bus.  This is just gruesome and appalling that they murdered this young rising star all for greed!!  Moreover, people trust their co-stars and to betray someone’s trust like that is doubly appalling!

Detectives have told The Daily Telegraph that:

“We are still investigating the case and both the accused along with a police team are visiting the crime spot. We have yet to recover the body.  They [Amit and Preeti] wanted to extort money from her family. They have confessed to the crime. She was strangulated in a hotel and her body was hacked into pieces and thrown in a water tank. They threw her head from a moving bus while traveling back to Mumbai.”

Amit and Preeti have confessed to the crime as they were found in possession of her cell phone and SIM card.

This is one of the most horrific crimes to hit Bollywood in recent years.  I am disgusted by the fact that people in today’s society have become so greedy.  Who are we to decide who lives and dies!  To take steps to murder someone, all for money is beyond ludicrous!  While my thoughts and prayers go out to her family, I also hope and pray that humanity will be revived in our society and that such crimes no longer occur.

May Meekashi’s soul rest in peace.
