Lakme Fashion Week 2012: Disastrous Headpieces and Arabesque Successes

India’s most prestigious fashion event has so far been full of surprising and beautiful pieces. I have to admit, I have been truly impressed by all of the collections these brilliant designers have had to offer. With some 83 designers scheduled to showcase their work by the end of Lakme Fashion Week, we chose some of the collections that stood out the most:

The most stunning piece so far has most definitely been Vikram Phadnis’s black and gold ensemble worn by the stunning Malaika Arora Khan. Munni looks so fierce!

Vikram Phadnis’s collection was very Arabesque- composed of golds and blacks, with simple yet heavy work. I absolutely loved the shawls the men wore. Here are some other fabulous pieces from his Summer/Resort 2012 collection:

Suhani Pitties was another designer who chose to incorporate gold embellishments, yet she chose to stay on the more simple side.

On the other hand, I don’t really know how I feel about Shivan and Narresh’s collection. Although some of the pieces were quite beautiful, the outrageous headpieces made no sense. They almost resemble upside-down fruit baskets. Sometimes- the more simple, the better.

Bhairavi Jaikishan presented us with a collection of traditional beautiful bright-colored saris. I loved them all, nothing like a stunning sari made of luxurious fabrics on a woman!

Priyadarshini Rao’s collection was full of a variety of beautiful pieces with more of a Western touch: patterned tops, cropped blazers, and gorgeous casual accessories. The models all wore heavy blue eye make-up to complete the look.

Khushali Kumar’s collection reminded me of a fairy tale. It was composed of beautiful fantasy-like dresses in natural tan and cream colors. And how can you go wrong with Dia Mirza as your show stopper? That beauty queen would make even the ugliest clothes look nice. The soft light make-up works so well with the colors of all the pieces!

Last but not least, Little Shilpa and Nitin Bal Chauhan decided to take us back with Memories of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. Internationally, Disney has successfully partnered with prominent designers like D&G and Alfred Angelo. I’m so excited to see what the reactions are to bringing this idea to India! Regardless, the collection was composed of cute funky headpieces and accessories to accompany the black, white, and red clothing.
