UrbanAsian talks to ‘Ill Defined’!

UK duo, Ill Defined, has a few words to share with UrbanAsian readers! Check it out!

UA: Hey Mar2s and Ripz, how are you boys doing? Why don’t start off by telling our readers a little bit about yourselves and ‘Ill Defined’?

Well, we are a hip-hop act/production duo, 2 brothers hailing from Bedford England, we produce, write songs, rap and class ourselves as students of music. We are always striving to learn and perfect our art. We are both 80’s babies, and grew up listening to a lot of early 90’s hip-hop and R&B, so we are mainly influenced by the hip-hop movement.

UA: When you were children, who were your musical idols?

My dad was a huge Motown fan and we grew up listening to people such as Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Smokie Robinson and then artists and groups like Earth Wind and Fire, Michael Jackson, Prince and then the golden age of hip-hop, Dre Dre, A Tribe called Quest, Bone Thugs N Harmony, De La Soul, NWA, Public Enemy, Freestyle Fellowship, LPG, Nas, Rakim, Snoop Dogg, Dog Pound, 2Pac and the list goes on…you get the picture. And then obviously, a huge Asian influence, from Bhangra and Hindi artists alike.

UA: When did you decide to get into the music industry?

We have been around it for some time. It just happened very naturally. It wasn’t a conscious decision we made to pursue music, but I think in the last 4-5 years, things really starting to kick off and it’s just been a snowball effect since then!

UA: I hear you have been rapping and producing music for over 10 years! What inspired you to become rappers/producers?

Music inspired us, artists inspired us such as the ones mentioned before. Music is a universal language that transcends race, religion and is a real expression of one’s speech.

UA: What give you the idea of naming your duo ‘Ill Defined’?

The meaning of Ill Defined is: ‘not clearly or sharply defined’ it’s used to describe something that is not understood and something you do not quite know what to do with, it is like a problem. The name makes a statement about our music and how we feel as British Asians with a variety of musical influences. Our style is unique; you can’t box what we do and create. We are influenced by many different things, which make us unique.

UA: Most groups generally focus on music of a specific genre or two. Why did you guys decide to create so much diversity in your music?

Because of the fact that we were influenced by so many different styles of music from soul, to hip-hop, to Bhangra, to Bollywood, we feel we are a product of our environment and influences. We don’t believe artists should be forced to be boxed, but they should be free to create whatever is inside of them.

UA: What can your fans expect to hear from you in the near future? Are there any new singles or albums that you are working on?

Right now, we are about to blow! We have loads of music ready to pop and we’re exploring opportunities presented to us. We were in a situation where we were held back from releasing music, but now we are free from that, and will soon be flooding everyone with our sounds. We are currently producing for a lot of artists so you should hear us pop up here. In 3 words: WATCH THIS SPACE!

UA: Is there anything else that you would like to add for your fans and our readers before we go?

First of all, we’d like to say thanks to everyone that has supported us, whether you are fans, artists or in the industry in some way.
