Three explosions have hit busy locations in India’s business capital of Mumbai on late Wednesday evening.
Reports say at least 20 people were killed and 113 injured in the coordinated attack.
Chhagan Bhujbal, the Maharashtra state’s public works minister told a TV news channel “It must be a bomb blast.”
The first explosion took place in south Mumbai’s famed jewelry market, Zaveri Bazaar, near the famous Mumbadevi temple.
The second blast happened in central Mumbai in Dadar area where there is a train station near by that millions of commuters use everyday.
The third blast took place in south Mumbai’s Opera House on Charni Road.
The blast at Opera House was the “most powerful”, said Maharashtra Chief Minister, Prithviraj Chavan.
The explosions happened around 7 p.m., when all the neighborhoods would have been packed with office workers and commuters.
At this time, a large number of victims are pouring into the hospitals that are facing injuries from the bomb blast. Most of them are taken to JJ, St George, GT, KEM and Harkishandas hospitals while some of the victims were moved to Nair and Saifee hospitals for further treatment.
“All the injured have suffered severe burns and their body parts have been crushed,” Pravin Shingare, Co-Director of St George hospital, said.
At state-run JJ Hospital, 17 injured were admitted of which one died during treatment. At Harkishandas Hospital, 29 injured people are brought in 6 of which have suffered serious wounds. There has been 9 people admitted to St Georges Hospital, one of which is said to be in a serious condition and one who died while being treated.
Some of the injured were identified as Pradeep Jano, Ashok Patil, Nikhil Tanka and Sundar Singh, hospital officials said.
The communication network has been jammed and people are unable to get through phone lines in the city. An NIA team has been sent for Mumbai. All states have been put on high alert as police teams quickly moved into the three places. In New Delhi, the home ministry put the National Security Guard (NSG) on alert.
