The IIFA Diaries – “Beyond Bollywood”

This article is brought to you by TwoMangoes .  A cool new online dating site for South Asians…because matrimonial sites just don’t cut it anymore!

The tickets have been printed and mailed out, the premiere film has been chosen and the guest list is slowly, but surely being confirmed…The 2011 IIFA Awards are only one month away!

As the excitement builds, it’s important to remember that the 2011 IIFA Awards are more than just theatrical dances and Bollywood films, it’s an opportunity to showcase the best of Indian cinema and its talent on an international platform. Bollywood films, formally known as mainstream Hindi films have made their presence felt in many international platforms. Whether it was  an Oscar nomination for Lagaan in the Best Foreign Language Film category, Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan’s catwalks on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festivals or Anil Kapoor’s brilliant performance in the popular TV show 24…Bollywood is being recognized…everywhere! What’s important to remember is that Bollywood is more than song, dance and running around the tree stereotypes – it is a genre that has won the hearts of billions of people across the globe both within and outside the South Asian culture.

While the beauty of South Asian culture and its traditions continue to exist today, Bollywood films are becoming more representative of the changing aspects of the South Asian culture. Sexuality and sensuality are common themes and visuals in films today, including the forbidden kissing scenes (not so forbidden anymore!) and the more diverse topics that Bollywood films choose to portray and explore. Bollywood films are now a social medium, commenting on various parts of Indian society, showing lifestyles and relationships that were once seen as being too revealing for the big screen.

Moreover, Bollywood films are acknowledging the South Asians existing in different parts of the world, in diasporas across the globe. With that said, aside from being just a stop on a concert tour schedule, Bollywood is finally making Toronto a Bollywood destination once and for all! Toronto will be its first mark within North American territory and this June promises to be the start to a lot of North American Bollywood masala to come!

How do you feel about Toronto being the first North American city to host the IIFA Awards?
