Bollywood Love for Coconuts: Part IX – “The Tree Trunk”

This article is brought to you by TwoMangoes .  A cool new online dating site for South Asians…because matrimonial sites just don’t cut it anymore!

Spring is here and sinuses are at an all time high. You know what else is lurking in the air? It’s the BW Syndrome, you know, the other allergy? You have probably spent the past few months running around in open fields, rolling down the hills in a loving embrace and whispering sweet nothings to each other. Oh, let’s not forget the random smiles and winks just for the sake of absolutely nothing. You have also spent a lot of time mastering the art of running around trees and now you have run into one. A giant, tall, BROWN tree trunk. What’s this you say? It’s the third entity, the silent partner in your relationship. It’s known as the Bollywood film. Sigh.

This brown Bollywood tree trunk is the harbor of expectations and stereotypes about love, life, relationships and culture. The tree trunk is so deeply rooted in escapism that it ceases to be real, it blurs definitions and it defies comprehension. Let’s be frank…while a Bollywood film is a great way to entertain yourself for a few hours, it is not a great example of how to go about love and relationships in your everyday life. It takes us away from reality, it let’s us believe in a chase (remember this?), it makes us think love comes easily and with a hit musical score as well. The tree trunk is our expectations, our rooted beliefs that the mere act of believing will have us experiencing a love story like the one in Hum Aapke Hain Koun! Wrong! Love is connection, chemistry is natural and the only soundtracks that should be playing are the ones you and your loved one dance to at parties. Get rid of that tree trunk…before its too late!

The tree trunk prevents us from being upfront and honest about how we truly feel. Its entertainment value and capacity to keep us glued to whatever we see and hear is so strong that it hinders our ability to be open to new things and people. The trunk is dangerous and its values and principles should be left at the theater. Here are a few tips to help you understand the trunk and discredit its power over our minds…

Running around the trees – This essentially is the act of “beating around the bush” and we all know its good to always be honest, upfront and forward. No trees and no running, thank you!

Whispers and sweet nothings – It’s just filler. If the connection is there, you will be having meaningful conversations and not wasting time whispering two word phrases to each other. Instead, you will impress one another with sweet gestures, ones that matter!

The length – Yes, length matters…the length of the film that is. Bollywood films are simply 2-3 hours. Short lived. Its content is meant to be left at the door and not taken with you. Make this a habit!

So grab the tree trunk from its roots and toss it out the door. It’s time to be free of its restraints and celebrate everything that comes from just simply being you!
