Goldspot recreated the magic of “Ina Mina Dika” by the legendary Asha Bolsle and Kishore Kumar for the soundtrack of “Today’s Special” starring actor/comedian Aasif Mandvi!
The Retro American Indie band that’s been described as “A hint of George Harrison at his transcendental best,” Los Angeles Times Magazine, reworked the 1950’s track and released the music video on April 21. The lead singer, Siddhartha Khosla, called up video producer Nick Colett to see if he wanted to direct the video and Colett agreed right away!
“The track was so awesome I basically said yes straight away even though I had no idea what we were going to shoot or how we were going to shoot it. Because the song is a crossover between American and Indian musical styles I wanted to do a very literal visual translation of that by putting Indian performers in unmistakably American locations.” says Nick.
The video has a cameo by Aasif Mandvi and features Bollywood dancer Payal Kadakia who endured three days of dancing barefoot around famous landmarks New York and New Jersey! Singer/songwriter Sid grew up in New Jersey listening to Bollywood oldies and western rock bands.
“Western indie pop/rock sounds together with Bollywood inspired melodies and instrumentation just seems like a natural and wonderful musical partnership to me,” said Sid. “Mohammed Rafi, Michael Stipe of REM, Kishore Kumar, and The Beatles have inspired me ever since I could sing my first note.”
Goldspot have released several albums, under major label Universal Music Group (UMG) and independently. Their most recent release “And The Elephant is Dancing” (2010) has charted its way across non-commercial radio stations across the US and into television, film, and advertisements. “And The Elephant is Dancing” is the follow-up to Goldspot’s critically acclaimed full-length major label debut “Tally of the Yes Men” (Mercury UK/ Universal Music Group).
Tally was recognized by the Sunday Times (UK) as one of the best albums of the year, with Goldspot being named as one of their best new acts of the year. Hit single “Friday” put the band in the top 20 in the UK radio charts, and at No. 10 in the alternative charts. A Hindi version of “Friday” reached number 4 in the BBC Asian Network radio charts. Follow-up single, “It’s Getting Old” was awarded an iTunes Single of the Week slot and became one of the retailer’s largest free downloads in its history.
