When Rani met Sabyasachi

Rani Mukherjee and Sabyasachi Mukherjee (no relation by the way) were featured in the November 2010 issue of Vogue India in the “Icons meet Icons” feature.

Sabyasachi Mukherjee is a renowned fashion designer from Kolkatta (just like Rani!) He began his self-titled line in 1999 soon after he graduated from the National Institute of Fashion Technology.  In 2004, Sabyasachi was not only a part of the Kuala Lampur fashion week and Lakme India Fashion Week but also the only Indian designer to be showcased at the Milan Fashion Week of 2004. He was also voted by Asia Inc, (a Singapore-based business magazine,) as one of the ten most influential Indians in Asia!

Now Rani Mukherjee is an actress who needs no introduction. Her first acting role was a short cameo at the age of 14 in the Bengali film Biyer Phool, directed by her father, Ram Mukherjee, in 1992. In 1997 a 19-year-old Rani played the lead in Raja ki Ayegi Baraat, but her biggest hit was her role in Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. KKHH is the movie that didn’t just launch but skyrocketed Rani’s career straight to the moon! Since then the talented Rani has been everyone’s Bollywood sweetheart.

Sabyasachi himself has taken a dip in Bollywood by working in movies like Paa, Raavan, and the upcoming release, Guzaarish. Sabyasachi designed costumes for Sanjay Leela Bansali’s Black, Babul, and Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, all of which coincidentally stars Rani Mukherjee! Take a look at Rani dressed in a Frieda Kahlo style outfit by Sabyasachi and Sabyasachi himself sitting beside her.

What do you think of these talented Mukerjee’s pairing up to spread a little Kolkatta flavor to the rest of the world? Rani’s Frieda Kahlo look seems to work on her, no?
